Kunstraum Kreuzlingen will present ‘Fliegende Gärten’, a new production by Tim Zulauf/KMU Produktionen, in two performances on 22 and 23 August 2026, both beginning at 19:30. The work is described as a free-air performance and a theatrical installation that brings together ecology, microbiology, sound, image and text. The venue’s announcement places the piece in the context of an ongoing experimental programme during its renovation period, when the Kunstraum is open only for events.

According to the material released by Kunstraum Kreuzlingen, ‘Fliegende Gärten’ unfolds between microbes, compost, viral video fragments and sound particles. The production follows two biologists investigating whether microbial cycles can be accelerated to improve soils and address microplastic pollution. Their work involves experiments with bodily bacterial biomes, but the arrival of a new colleague raises a suspicion that the release experiment is already under way — though in dimensions that were not anticipated.

The project’s framing draws on biological processes at both microscopic and planetary scales. The text notes that microbes circulate from vegetable beds through human bodies and onto the films coating smartphones, then back again, and that human body cells themselves arose long ago from microbial fusion. It also points to cyanobacteria as the source of atmospheric oxygen, using that premise to position the smallest life forms as possible contributors to some of the largest environmental questions. The performance is presented as a trip to the edges of decision-making power, asking who is in charge when a human body contains more microorganisms than its own cells.

Kunstraum Kreuzlingen describes the work as taking place as an art installation in a vegetable garden, moving from the origins of life to a vision of new ecologies. In that vision, nature, human beings and technology are imagined as intertwined and symbiotic rather than separate. The production’s tone is described in the source material as wild, sensual and resistant to ecological exhaustion.

The production reunites Tim Zulauf/KMU Produktionen with Yves Netzhammer and Nikki Buzzi. The announcement says their visual and sonic worlds most recently interwove with Zulauf’s texts and the spaces of the Swiss stock exchange SIX in 2022–2023, and that the team is now continuing the collaboration with a focus on nutrition and ecology. The performance credits list Silke Geertz, Donya Speaks and Andreas Storm for performance; Tim Zulauf for project and text; Nikki Buzzi for sound; Yves Netzhammer for image worlds; Lena Omlin for light; and Andreas Storm for dramaturgy.

The August dates at Kunstraum Kreuzlingen are part of a wider series of performances listed by the production, which also includes earlier presentations at Fabriktheater Rote Fabrik in Zürich and at ‘Expanded Fields: TRADIcTION’ in Samstagern. For Kunstraum Kreuzlingen, the two shows are scheduled for Saturday 22 August and Sunday 23 August 2026, each at 19:30, at Bodanstrasse 7a in Kreuzlingen.
