The Philadelphia Museum of Art is presenting ‘Sebastian Errazuriz: Double Take’, a mid-career survey of the Chilean artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz, born in 1977. On view in the museum’s Main Building, in Alter Gallery 276, the exhibition runs through August 16 and is free with museum admission.
According to the museum, ‘Double Take’ traces more than 20 years of Errazuriz’s practice across art, craft, design and technology. The show brings together early conceptual works shaped by nature and found objects, along with furniture, mirrors and other products created from appropriated and digitally manipulated Greco-Roman antiquities. The exhibition also includes his so-called kinetic cabinets, objects with moveable elements that rotate, spin and fan out.
The museum frames Errazuriz’s practice as deliberately hard to categorize. In the exhibition text, he is described as a multi-hyphenate artist and designer whose work spans antiquity-inspired furniture and multimedia pieces informed by artificial intelligence. The presentation is organized by Tiffany Lambert, The Lisa Roberts and David Seltzer Curator of Modern and Contemporary Design.
Errazuriz’s approach includes what the museum quotes as his effort to “explode the box,” a reference to his challenge to conventional cabinet form. Rather than treating furniture as fixed utility, the works in ‘Double Take’ propose objects that change shape and orientation, shifting the relationship between use, display and movement. The exhibition materials say this interest extends from limited-edition and one-of-a-kind pieces to works with humor, appropriation and cultural commentary.
The museum’s own artist overview places Errazuriz within a broad international context, noting that his work has been shown at institutions including Kiasma in Helsinki, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, as well as at art and design fairs such as the Armory Art Show and Art Basel Miami Beach. It also notes recent work linked to artificial intelligence, including his self-published book ‘IMAGINE Artificial General Intelligence’ from 2025.
A related talk, ‘Collab Design Excellence Award 2025: Sebastian Errazuriz’, is listed on the exhibition page as a celebration of his receipt of that year’s award. The museum also notes that ‘Sebastian Errazuriz: Double Take’ is made possible by The Lisa S. Roberts and David W. Seltzer Endowment Fund. The exhibition remains on view through August 16 in Alter Gallery 276, Main Building.
