The Art Gallery of Peterborough is showing Lyn Carter’s ‘The Pinks’, an immersive animation and sound installation on view from July 11 to October 4, 2026. The exhibition presents six quirky, relatable, non-human characters whose looping animations gradually fall out of sync, creating shifting interactions as their vocalizations change over time.
According to the gallery, ‘The Pinks’ follows the characters as they explore their bodies, surroundings and the confining edges of their TV screens. The work reflects on curiosity, vulnerability and the shared experience of being human, while keeping its focus on figures that are explicitly not human. The installation is described as combining animation and sound, but Carter’s own statement on the exhibition places sculpture at the centre of the project, with movement and sound added to that sculptural base.
The exhibition is curated by Mary Reid and Danielle Hoevenaars, and it is organized and circulated by Woodstock Art Gallery with support from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. The Art Gallery of Peterborough is hosting the show as part of its current exhibition program. In the gallery’s August newsletter and exhibition page, ‘The Pinks’ is presented alongside other ongoing exhibitions and public programs, including the 42nd Annual KAST Selections Exhibition and the Youth Art Mentorship Program exhibition.
Carter works primarily in sculpture, and also in drawing, video and animation. The artist’s exhibition text says ‘The Pinks’ was made with scale in mind, so that the animated characters would have equal presence to the people in the room. Carter describes the figures as fluid in identity and as encouraging slippage between apparently opposite realms, including male and female, human and animal, and digital and physical.
The artist’s statement also frames the characters’ responses to the conditions of the installation as a form of tension and persistence. As the animations loop endlessly, each Pink confronts what Carter describes as impositions on being and habitat that seem outside their control, with responses of frustration, bewilderment and anger, alongside defiance and determination.
The gallery's exhibition page says Carter's sculpture animation project 'The Pinks' will be touring as of 2026. Carter has exhibited across Canada and internationally, including in China, the United States, Australia, Britain, Spain and Mexico, according to the gallery’s exhibition page. The artist’s work is represented in permanent collections including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, Cambridge Galleries in Cambridge, Ontario, the AstraZeneca Collection in Mississauga, and the Dalhousie Art Gallery in Halifax.
At the Art Gallery of Peterborough, the exhibition opened with a reception on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, shared with the 42nd Annual KAST Selections Exhibition, and runs through October 4, 2026. The gallery also lists an artist talk with Lyn Carter for Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Admission is free, with summer hours of 11:00 am to 5:00 pm daily from July 1 to September 6.
