Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco will open ‘Lee Friedlander: Maria’ on September 10, 2026, bringing together an extended portrait of the photographer’s wife that spans seven decades. The exhibition is scheduled to run through October 24, 2026, and will present more than 70 images tracing the arc of the couple’s relationship through marriage, parenthood, grandparenthood, and beyond.
According to the gallery’s announcement, the project centers on Maria as Friedlander’s wife, muse, and most recurrent subject. The exhibition statement describes the work as one of the longest extended portraits in the history of visual art, with approximately 50 photographs in the show itself covering the 1950s through the 2020s. Fraenkel Gallery’s shop page notes that the accompanying book expands that sequence to more than 70 images.
The material assembled for ‘Lee Friedlander: Maria’ also frames the portraits as a record of everyday life. Friedlander’s photographs show Maria reading, driving, talking on the phone, lying in the sun, and reading another book. The gallery notes that some images are straightforward depictions of a man looking at his wife, while others carry Friedlander’s more recognizably layered approach, with shadows, objects, reflections, and partial views interrupting the scene.
The exhibition text emphasizes that these photographs do more than document a relationship. They also chart the evolution of Friedlander’s artistic vision over time. In one description, the gallery notes that the pictures belong to a broader tradition of artists who have made long-term studies of their spouses, but that Maria here is “rarely a classical muse.” Instead, the photographs present her as a human and vulnerable presence, meeting the camera without pretense.
Fraenkel Gallery’s shop listing says a new hardcover publication will accompany the exhibition. The book, also titled ‘Lee Friedlander: Maria,’ is scheduled for release on September 10, 2026, the same day the exhibition opens. The volume is listed as a hardcover edition measuring 12.75 x 11.75 inches, with 176 pages, 72 tritone illustrations and one color illustration, and an introduction by Jeffrey Fraenkel.
Friedlander, born in 1934, began photographing in 1948, and his work was included in the influential 1967 exhibition ‘New Documents’ at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, curated by John Szarkowski. Fraenkel Gallery’s artist information says his prints are held by major collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. ‘Lee Friedlander: Maria’ will be on view at Fraenkel Gallery, 49 Geary Street, 4th Floor, San Francisco, from September 10 to October 24, 2026.
