Fairfield Porter’s painting ‘Oak Tree’ has traveled from Northampton to New York for ‘Fairfield Porter: What Everyone Knows’, an exhibition at the Art Students League that presents more than 35 works from across the artist’s career. The show, on view June 5 through August 18, 2026, is described by the League as the first large-scale exhibition of Porter’s work in New York City in twenty-five years and the first ever at the institution where he studied from 1928 to 1930.

The Smith College Museum of Art highlighted the loan in its newsletter, noting that the 1969 canvas from SCMA’s collection is now on view at the Art Students League. SCMA’s email framed the work as part of its ongoing collection in motion, linking the museum’s holdings to the New York exhibition without suggesting the museum itself is hosting the show. The League’s exhibition page identifies the loaned painting as ‘Oak Tree’, 1969, oil on canvas, 22 by 20 inches, a gift of Susan S. Small.

Porter, who lived from 1907 to 1975, is presented by the League as a significant but still under-recognized American painter. The exhibition text cites John Ashbery’s 1983 description of Porter as “perhaps the major American artist of this century,” and emphasizes the artist’s enduring focus on shaded lawns, uncleared tables, and coastal views. The League also points to Porter’s own claim that “the real is specific,” using that phrase to frame the exhibition’s attention to appearances, ordinary subjects, and the instability of perception.

According to the League, the exhibition brings together works from the Parrish Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, private collections, and the League’s permanent collection. It also includes rarely seen archival documents and ephemera. The material is presented as a survey of Porter’s career, with particular emphasis on the empiricism he developed in his art criticism and realized in his paintings. The institution describes Porter’s essays, including ‘What Is Real’, ‘The Immediacy of Experience’, ‘Against Idealism’, and ‘Art and Knowledge’, as central to that approach.

The League says Porter drew a distinction between the “ideas” and “systems” of science and philosophy and the “appearances” of art, which he understood as more concrete, particular, and fleeting. In the exhibition text, those ideas are tied to the way Porter painted the world around him: family and friends, his homes in Southampton and Maine, the interiors where he ate and read, and the coastal landscapes outside. The show also places these works in dialogue with artists and writers associated with Porter’s milieu.

Alongside Porter’s own paintings, the exhibition includes work by his Art Students League instructor Thomas Hart Benton and fellow student Jackson Pollock, as well as Joe Brainard, Jane Freilicher, John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, and James Schuyler. The League says the installation situates Porter within overlapping strands of realism and abstraction and within New York School poetry. Curated by Sam Sackeroff, the exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with essays by Sackeroff and Alexander Nemerov.

Public programming tied to the exhibition includes talks and an evening event on June 9, June 22, June 26, July 20, and August 10. The exhibition is installed in the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery, 2nd floor, at the Art Students League of New York, 215 West 57th Street.
