The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo will open later on two August Fridays for 'Summer Night Museum 2026', a seasonal program that combines extended gallery access with live music, guided tours and special evening entry rules. According to the museum’s announcement, the event runs on August 7 and 14, with opening hours extended to 9 p.m. and exhibition admission available until 8:30 p.m.
The Tokyo museum said the initiative is part of a wider citywide effort involving six metropolitan cultural institutions. At MOT, the late openings apply on Fridays only, and the museum’s library is the one space excluded from the longer hours, remaining open until 6 p.m. The museum also noted that its shop, café and restaurant will keep evening hours to match the program.
A key feature of the event is discounted and free admission after 5 p.m. On those evenings, selected exhibitions are free for students and discounted by 20 percent for general visitors and those aged 65 and over, with proof required. The museum specified that the offer applies only to on-site ticket purchases and cannot be combined with other discounts. The announcement names 'MOT Collection: Hajimete, Bijutsu' as the exhibition covered by the evening pricing.
The museum is also pairing the late openings with 'Museum × Music!', a mini-concert created in collaboration with Tokyo Bunka Kaikan. The performances will take place on August 7 in the first-floor entrance hall and feature flautist Miyu Noguchi and cellist Yukimi Muramatsu, both identified by the museum in its program listing. Two concert sets are scheduled, from 6:30 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. and from 7:30 p.m. to 7:50 p.m.
In addition to the concerts, volunteer guide staff will lead night gallery talks in the collection galleries on both August 7 and 14, beginning at 7 p.m. and lasting about an hour. These talks will focus on works in the MOT Collection exhibition and meet at the entrance to the collection galleries. Participation requires an exhibition ticket, an MOT Passport, or presentation of a disability certificate, according to the museum.
The program also includes a separate 'Gallery Cruise' titled 'A Stroll Through the Museum: Gathering Cool in a Summer Night', described as a relaxed evening visit aimed primarily at adults aged 18 and over. It will run on both August 7 and 14 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with places limited to eight participants per session and advance application required. The museum said applications close at 10 a.m. on July 27, and that winners will be selected by lottery if demand exceeds capacity.
