The Bauhaus Museum Weimar will open a new special exhibition devoted to sculptor Gerhard Marcks on 21 August 2026, presenting 29 early woodcuts that are being shown publicly for the first time. The exhibition, titled 'Gerhard Marcks - Fruehe Holzschnitte des Bauhaus-Meisters aus der Sammlung HHW', runs through 11 January 2027 and is being presented in Weimar by the Bauhaus Museum as part of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar’s August programme.
According to the museum’s newsletter, Marcks is regarded as one of the defining figures of the early Bauhaus period in Weimar. He was appointed to the Staatliches Bauhaus by Walter Gropius in 1919 and led the school’s ceramics workshop until 1925. The newsletter notes that the workshop was especially productive under Marcks, and says that more than 90 ceramic objects in the historical Bauhaus collection reflect his significance for the institution.
The exhibition is linked to a recently acquired donation from the Sammlung HHW. That donation provides the occasion for the museum to display the 29 early woodcuts for the first time in public, extending attention beyond Marcks’s better-known role as a sculptor and Bauhaus teacher. One image highlighted in the newsletter is 'Wintertraum' also known as 'Neuschnee', a 1924 woodcut reproduced as the issue’s title image.
The show opens a day before the public run begins: the opening is scheduled for 20 August at 6 p.m., with a supporting programme and free admission to the opening event. The newsletter lists the exhibition venue as the Bauhaus Museum Weimar and places the run from 21 August 2026 to 11 January 2027.
The Marcks presentation appears within a busy August calendar for the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, which is also marking Goethe’s 277th birthday with free admission to selected museums on 28 August and several related programmes.
