CAMeC in La Spezia will dedicate its Project Room to Lorenzo D’Anteo this summer with Quasi Picturae, on view from 10 July to 30 August 2026. The exhibition opens on Friday 10 July at 7 p.m. at CAMeC La Spezia, with the evening continuing until 11 p.m. and music on the museum terrace. Admission to the opening event is free.
According to the museum, the Project Room presentation is intended as a close look at D’Anteo’s artistic practice, which is defined by a sustained intertwining of painting, sculpture and drawing. The exhibition text says the artist’s work does not remain confined to the painted surface, but enters into dialogue with volume, assemblage, objects and the memory of materials. In that sense, the show is framed as a focused survey of a practice that moves across mediums rather than treating them as separate categories.
D’Anteo was born in La Spezia in 1973 and studied sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara. CAMeC describes his work over the last two decades as developing through three main languages: drawing, sculpture and oil painting. The museum also places his research in relation to tradition and to personal reworking, combining art-historical references, popular imagery, grotesque elements and suggestions drawn from contemporary visual culture.
The museum’s presentation emphasizes the exchange between media as a defining feature of D’Anteo’s visual world. Drawing is described as building an archive of images, sculpture as introducing presence, body and volume, and painting as transforming fragments into apparition. That approach aligns with the title Quasi Picturae, which signals a reflection on what painting can become when it is shaped by sculptural and drawn elements as well as by material memory.
The exhibition also reflects CAMeC’s use of the Project Room as a space for autonomous projects distinct from temporary exhibitions and the permanent collection. The museum says the room is meant to deepen specific artistic research, activate dialogues with works in the museum and foster collaborations with artists, curators and cultural institutions. Its bimonthly program contributes to the museum’s ongoing renewal of its cultural offering.
For CAMeC, the show places a local artist within a museum platform designed for experimentation and research, while also connecting the presentation to wider debates in contemporary art about medium boundaries and material thinking. In a museum year that already includes current exhibitions such as Fotosintesi. Fotografie dalla collezione Carla Sozzani and Ripensando il Romanticismo nell'arte contemporanea, Quasi Picturae adds a focused project that underscores the continued relevance of painting’s relationship to sculpture and drawing.
