Museum Brandhorst in Munich is presenting 'Carrying', an exhibition and event project that runs until November 8, 2026. Curated by Franziska Linhardt, the show activates spaces inside and outside the museum and brings together international artists to examine how places carry narratives and histories. According to the museum, the project uses installations, performances, paintings, sound works and film to explore the intersection of military and cultural power.
The exhibition is rooted in the specific history of the site where Museum Brandhorst, the Pinakothek der Moderne and other institutions of the Kunstareal now stand. The museum notes that the area was once home to the Prinz-Arnulf-Kaserne, also called the 'Türkenkaserne'. The name of the military complex, built in 1826, is linked to prisoners of war brought from the Ottoman Empire to Bavaria for forced labor in the late 17th century, a history that also remains embedded in local place names such as Türkenstraße.
'Carrying' presents work by artists including Hêlîn Alas, Cana Bilir-Meier, Louise Lawler, Kate Newby, Tiffany Sia, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith and Leyla Yenirce, among others. The museum says these artists engage with historically charged locations such as Cy Twombly’s 'Lepanto' room and the so-called Türkentor. Their contributions are described as architectural interventions, performances, paintings, sound pieces and films that enter into dialogue with the museum and its setting.
The curatorial framing asks how stories are told, who tells them and how they are passed on. Museum Brandhorst describes the exhibition as a reflection on the relationship between history and memory, including the ways in which invented narratives can become intertwined with material traces of the past. The project also addresses broader themes that the museum says continue to shape public debate, including migration, territorial borders and belonging.
The museum says the exhibition treats the institution itself as a resonant space in which its own history and identity can be examined. That approach links local points of reference to wider questions, while allowing the museum’s architecture and its surroundings to become part of the exhibition’s structure. The venue for the project is listed as the upper floor, lower floor and outdoor space.
A number of related programs are scheduled alongside the exhibition. These include 'Führung | Carrying: Mapping Points' on July 30, 2026, 'Eine Stunde mit... Franziska Linhardt, Kuratorin, zu 'Carrying'' on August 6, 2026, and 'Geschichten und Geschichte in der Ausstellung 'Carrying'' on August 8, 2026. The museum also lists 'Carrying: Walkthrough' for August 20, 2026. The exhibition is on view at Museum Brandhorst in Munich from May 14 to November 8, 2026.
