A lecture will examine how Franz Marc’s work was renegotiated under Nazism amid cultural-political exclusion, national appropriation and continuing esteem. Marc was condemned as an Expressionist under Nazism while also being appropriated as a German soldier who died in 1916. It will also ask why the ‘value of a fallen soldier’ temporarily gave Marc a particular position under Nazism.
Isgard Kracht, an art historian and provenance researcher based in Düsseldorf, will give the lecture. The event is part of the series ‘Wieso, weshalb, warum. Sammlungsgeschichten aus dem Lenbachhaus’ and takes place in the context of the exhibition ‘Über die Welt hinaus. Der Blaue Reiter’.
The lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, 28 October 2026, from 6:30 to 8pm. It will meet at the Georg-Knorr-Saal; admission is free and no registration is required.
