KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin will hold the next edition of its Free Thursday on 13 August 2026, offering free admission and extended opening hours from 16:00 to 21:00. The evening is tied to the institution’s current presentation of the Kyiv Biennial chapter 'A Bird That Cannot Land', which runs at KW until 13 September 2026. A curator-led tour is scheduled to coincide with the free-entry period, giving visitors an opportunity to look more closely at the exhibition’s framework and its cross-disciplinary programme.

According to KW’s event listing, Free Thursday is part of the institution’s summer 2026 access initiative, with selected Thursdays opening from 16:00 onward. The museum describes KW as an exhibition house in Berlin-Mitte focused on production, presentation and mediation in contemporary art, and notes that it operates without a permanent collection. The free-entry format is presented as part of a continuing effort to broaden access to exhibitions during the summer season.

The Kyiv Biennial chapter at KW is described by the institution as an extensive exhibition, live and discursive programme spread across the building. KW identifies the biennial as a nomadic, international project that intertwines artistic, political and social questions. In Berlin, 'A Bird That Cannot Land' is framed around contemporary art, sound and exchange, with the institution emphasizing that the programme includes works by transnational artists and a broader live component that brings in voices from diasporic communities in Berlin.

The curator’s tour on 13 August, listed from 16:00 to 17:00 and conducted in English, is set to take place at the counter meeting point. Participation is free, though registration is required by email. The institution says the tours are led by the curators of the exhibition and are intended to offer visitors a chance to ask questions and gain deeper insight into the show’s conception.

KW’s exhibition text situates 'A Bird That Cannot Land' against changing political realities and foregrounds the idea of “Middle-East-Europe,” with attention to histories shaped by conflict, coloniality and imperialism. The institution says the exhibition links post-Soviet Eastern Europe with Central and Southwest Asia, as well as the Mediterranean region, and considers how meaning, belonging and shared experience are tested in times of war, uncertainty and estrangement. It also presents exile, in and out of the world, as a central condition of contemporary life.

The broader Kyiv Biennial chapter at KW includes a live programme that extends beyond the exhibition galleries. KW says the programme will include concerts, performances and listening sessions, and that it is intended to set Berlin’s diasporic communities in relation to translational artistic practices. The exhibition page lists more than 40 international participants across generations, alongside a curatorial team led at KW by Sofie Krogh Christensen, with related work by the Visual Culture Research Center in Kyiv and partner institutions in the wider biennial network.

Alongside the Free Thursday and curator-led tour, KW’s August programme also includes a residency by the ensemble Grounded Outer Space People, with open studio sessions on 25, 26 and 27 August and a performance on 28 August. The free-entry Thursday remains anchored to the Kyiv Biennial exhibition chapter, which is on view at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Auguststraße 69, Berlin, through 13 September 2026.
