The Kreeger Museum in Washington, D.C., is presenting ‘JOAN MIRÓ: From the Kreeger Collection’ through August 15, 2026, offering the museum’s complete collection of works by the Spanish artist in one exhibition. According to the museum, the presentation includes ‘The Mallorca Suite,’ ‘Makemono,’ and ‘El Vol de l’Alosa (The Flight of the Lark),’ and marks the first time these works have been on view in a decade.
The exhibition is listed on the museum’s current exhibitions page as running from May 23 to August 15, 2026. The Kreeger’s website says the show is being presented by The Kreeger Museum and situates it within the institution’s broader program of exhibitions and public events at its Foxhall Road site in Washington, D.C. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, with advance reservations recommended, and the grounds and galleries are part of a larger campus that also hosts talks, performances, and workshops.
The online exhibition text places Miró in the context of 20th-century experimental art rooted in Surrealism. It notes that he achieved notable success in painting by 1925, then began making prints in 1929 as a way to further push the boundaries of his practice. The museum also identifies collaboration as central to his printmaking, citing his work with Roger Lacourière, Stanley William Hayter, Fernand Mourlot, and Aimé Maeght.
The Kreeger’s materials emphasize the range of techniques Miró used across a long career. The exhibition text says he worked with woodcut, lithograph, intaglio, and carborundum processes, producing single-sheet works, series prints, and book illustrations on materials including silk, Guarro paper, and handmade paper. The museum states that over the course of his 70-year career, Miró created more than 2,000 prints.
One work singled out in the museum’s email announcement is ‘Mallorca Series,’ 1973, described as nine etchings and aquatint printed in black and colored inks, each accompanied by a state in color, a state in black, and a state in negative, for a total of 36 prints. The series includes an etched title page, and a separate gouache accompanies the edition. The same image credit appears on the exhibition page for the current show.
The Kreeger Museum’s description also links the artist’s legacy to the institution’s collecting history. It says David and Carmen Kreeger were devoted patrons of the arts and supported Washington-area artists in the 1960s and early 1970s, while The Collaborative, the museum’s guest artist exhibition program, was developed to support Washington-area artists. Though separate from the Miró exhibition, those materials show the museum situating a major modern European printmaker within a broader commitment to both its collection and the city’s art community.
‘JOAN MIRÓ: From the Kreeger Collection’ remains on view at The Kreeger Museum, 2401 Foxhall Road NW, Washington, D.C., through August 15, 2026.
