The exhibition brings together four series: ‘Ordeal by Roses,’ ‘Kamaitachi,’ ‘Embrace’ and ‘Simmon: A Private Landscape.’

Its presentation emphasizes Hosoe’s collaborations with Yukio Mishima, Tatsumi Hijikata and Yayoi Kusama.

One documented work is ‘Ordeal by Roses / Barakei #5,’ dated 1961. Another is an untitled photograph from ‘Simmon: A Private Landscape,’ dated 1971.

Although the photographs in ‘Simmon: A Private Landscape’ were made in the 1970s, the series was not published as a book until 2012, revealing a lesser-known but particularly personal dimension of Hosoe’s work.

Across these projects, Hosoe repeatedly brought photography into dialogue with other forms of artistic expression without subordinating the photograph to them.
