The musée des impressionnismes Giverny will invite Daniel Buren to take over its spaces in summer 2026 with a new site-specific work titled 'Plantations'. The exhibition runs from 17 July to 1 November 2026 at the museum in Giverny, and places Buren’s signature visual language of alternating white and colored vertical stripes at the center of the presentation.
Born in 1938, Buren is internationally known for using his 8.7-centimeter-wide stripes to reveal and emphasize the context of a place in works made 'in situ'. According to the museum’s announcement, 'Plantations' will extend across both the gardens and the interior galleries, creating a dialogue between the environment of Giverny and the museum’s collection.
Alongside Buren’s new work, the museum will present a summer selection of around 70 works from its own collections. These include paintings, sculptures, graphic works, photographs and decorative arts, arranged in five sections. The display is described as moving from lush nature scenes by artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Gustave Caillebotte and Maude Maris to seascapes and gardens by Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Hiramatsu Reiji.
The collection presentation is framed as an exploration of landscape and pictorial space. The museum says the route invites visitors into an immersion in landscape while also reflecting on the boundaries of pictorial space, a theme that aligns closely with Buren’s interest in how artworks respond to their surroundings.
The exhibition is curated by Cyrille Sciama, director general of the musée des impressionnismes Giverny and chief heritage curator, and Sylvie Patry, general curator of heritage at the Musée d’Orsay. Their curatorial framing places the contemporary commission and the historic collection side by side rather than treating them as separate strands.
The museum also lists public programming tied to the exhibition. Guided tours are scheduled every Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and a children’s preview is planned for Saturday 18 July from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The museum says the children’s event is free, reserved for ages 5 to 12, and limited to 20 places.
