The crowdfunding campaign to acquire Eugène Boudin’s ‘Trois-mâts devant Anvers’ (1872) has reached its stated target, and the painting has officially joined the museum’s collections. Nearly 290 donors contributed to the effort, alongside support from the Cercle des Mécènes du musée des impressionnismes Giverny and the Amis du musée. The campaign update reports that €40,000 had already been collected, thanking supporters for their mobilisation.
The appeal will nevertheless continue until 1 November because the initial target covers only part of the painting’s acquisition price.
According to the museum, additional donations will support work to promote the painting and help make it accessible to an increasingly broad public.
Boudin is known for his landscape painting and was fascinated by shorelines and ports, devoting a large part of his work to maritime scenes and skies in continual motion.
In 1856, in Honfleur, Boudin met the young Claude Monet and encouraged him to paint outdoors while observing changes in light, sky and colour. His view of nature and his work in the open air deeply influenced Monet and anticipated the beginnings of Impressionism.
