The Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki will host a public lecture by the photographer Akinbode Akinbiyi on Friday 16 October 2026, from 17:00 to 19:00. Held in English on the museum’s first floor at the Cable Factory, the talk focuses on his artistic work and approach. Places are booked in advance, and entry is with a museum ticket or Museum Card.
Born in Britain to a Nigerian family and now living in Berlin, Akinbiyi has been photographing for more than five decades. His subject is the sprawling megacities of Africa, among them Lagos, Cairo, Kinshasa, Johannesburg, Khartoum, Addis Ababa, Dakar and Bamako.
According to the museum, he moves slowly through these cities on foot, along their main roads and side streets, in an effort to understand the modern metropolis. Working with an analogue Rolleiflex camera, he records the layers of the city, chance everyday encounters and the atmosphere of the street.
The lecture is linked to his installation ‘The Other Side of the Mountain’ at Amos Rex, presented as part of Artfest. The work brings together 36 large black-and-white photographs that take viewers to Bamako, Johannesburg and Lagos.
The museum’s main partner is Tradeka, with Pro AV Saarikko Oy as a partner.
