The exhibition ‘Falling up’ opens on 22 October 2026 and runs through 29 March 2027. It is presented in Space01 at Kunsthaus Graz, where the opening is scheduled for 22 October 2026 at 18:00. Katia Huemer is the exhibition’s curator.
Eva Schlegel examines how perception and immateriality shape the relationship to space. Her practice encompasses a range of artistic forms, including sculptures, photographs, image objects, videos and augmented-reality projects.
Schlegel’s mirror works provide a notable example of this approach: they allow the old to be viewed while also looking into the new. In these works, space becomes a stage on which past and future interweave.
‘Falling up’ takes up the loss of orientation experienced amid far-reaching global crises, described as one of the prevailing experiences of the present. The exhibition sets this feeling against another way of seeing. Its paradoxical title, ‘falling up’, questions the laws of gravity and opens the possibility of understanding disorientation not exclusively as a threat, but also as a change of perspective.
Schlegel was born in 1960 in Hall in Tirol and lives and works in Vienna. In 1995, she represented Austria with her own work at the Venice Biennale; in 2011, she curated Austria’s pavilion, where Markus Schinwald presented an artistic project.
