The San Diego Museum of Art is presenting 'Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World', an exhibition focused on the fashion and portrait photography of Cecil Beaton (1904–1980). The show opened on 11 July 2026 and runs through January 10, 2027. It is organized by the National Portrait Gallery, London, and presented by the San Diego Museum of Art.
The exhibition is described as the first devoted entirely to Beaton’s fashion and portrait photography, work the museum says he elevated into an art form. Beaton is identified in the announcement as a photographer, fashion illustrator, Oscar-winning costume designer, social caricaturist and writer, reflecting the range of creative roles that defined his career across the twentieth-century British and American cultural worlds.
The newsletter positions the exhibition as a survey of Beaton at his most triumphant. It traces his image-making from the “Bright Young Things,” the socially prominent and artistically inclined circle in 1920s London, to his fashion photography for Vogue and other magazines. It also includes his work as a photographer during World War II and his later reinvention of royal portraiture for a modern age.
The presentation further extends to Beaton’s award-winning costume and set designs for 'My Fair Lady' on stage and screen. The museum says the exhibition follows his career across London, Paris, New York and Hollywood, cities where his photographs helped shape ideas of beauty, glamour and star power in the interwar and early post-war eras.
The works on view include portraits of some of the best-known figures of the twentieth century. The newsletter names Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando, along with Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. It also notes portraits of writers and artists including Truman Capote, Francis Bacon and Salvador Dalí.
The museum’s program listing also connects the exhibition to a members’ opening held on Thursday, July 9, with a reception at 5:00 p.m. and a lecture at 6:00 p.m. at the museum. The event, titled 'Friends in Focus: Friends Lecture & Exhibition Opening of Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World', is reserved for Friend-level members and above. Guest lecturer Robin Muir, identified by the museum as External Curator at the National Portrait Gallery in London, spoke on Beaton’s life and work and the lasting impact of his photographic career.
Alongside the Beaton exhibition, the museum’s July newsletter also notes a full schedule of other exhibitions and public programs, including newly opened and ongoing shows elsewhere in the institution’s galleries. 'Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World' remains on view through January 10, 2027 at the San Diego Museum of Art.
