David Salle’s ‘The Venice Paintings’ is scheduled for 21 October–23 December 2026 at Paris Pantin. Following Salle’s solo presentation at the Palazzo Cini Gallery during the 61st Venice Biennale earlier this year, the exhibition at Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Pantin reunites the works shown together in Venice.
The paintings use artificial intelligence to unravel and recalibrate the logic of painting. That process combines an AI model trained on Salle’s earlier Tapestry Paintings with oil painting.
The model focuses on Salle’s Tapestry Paintings, made between 1989 and 1991, a series based on 18th-century Imperial Russian tapestries that were themselves interpretations of 16th- and 17th-century Italian oil paintings.
Salle’s recent partnership with AI can be seen, in part, as an act of resistance to the proposition that AI will replace human creativity.
