The Mayor Gallery presents ‘Women of Pop’, a group exhibition featuring five works by four artists associated with Pop Art: Evelyne Axell, Pauline Boty, Sue Dunkley and Jann Haworth. The current exhibition runs from 6 to 23 October 2026.
The works are installed in the gallery’s lower gallery and can be viewed on request during visits.
Evelyne Axell’s ‘Érotomobile II’ (1965) belongs to the series that made her name, in which the car becomes a vehicle for female desire rather than a means of displaying the car itself. Pauline Boty is represented twice by ‘Untitled (Red, Yellow, Blue Abstract)’ (1961) and ‘Untitled (Sunflower Woman)’ (1963), with the latter identified as the point at which her abstraction turns toward the figuration and image-world of magazines and film.
Sue Dunkley’s ‘Untitled’ (1970) comes from the short series behind ‘Grief’, now in the Tate collection, and was made from press photographs of the Kennedy assassinations and the mass public mourning that followed. Jann Haworth’s ‘String Crazy Hired Man II’ (2004) uses sewn canvas and craft materials, expanding what a Pop object could be.
The gallery says it showed the artists long before the current reappraisal, including Pauline Boty’s ‘The Only Blonde in the World’ at the gallery in 1998 and Evelyne Axell’s ‘Érotomobiles’ in 2003.
