Made between 1995 and 2012, ‘STOP’ is a 120-minute film assembled from 2,500 rolls of 16-mm film shot between 1995 and 2011.
Preiss shot the footage according to the conventions of the home movie, but also applied rules and techniques that he developed through his work as a cinematographer. Through rigorous editing, and through retaining chronology directly in the camera, the material became ‘STOP’. The film’s formation consequently involved both the editing process and the preservation of chronology in the camera, as described in the screening material.
The work moves among family life, the history of the Orchard Gallery, architectural cinematography and post-9/11 New York.
The screening also connects to the themes of childhood and transformation in Tolia Astakhishvili’s exhibition ‘Figure of the Child’.
