Drawing from his work organizing ‘Grace Hartigan: The Gift of Attention’, Jared Ledesma, Curator of 20th-Century and Contemporary Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art, offers insight into Hartigan’s practice and the creative exchange between her work and the influential New York poets who shaped her artistic world, including Frank O’Hara, Barbara Guest and James Schuyler, among others.

Uniting works created between 1952 and 1968, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience Hartigan’s evolution during a pivotal moment in her career, when she deftly navigated between abstraction and figuration. The exhibition is organized by the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, while its presentation at Sheldon Museum of Art is organized by Christian Wurst, associate curator for exhibitions.

Works included in the exhibition are Hartigan’s ‘East Side Sunday’, ‘Grand Street Brides’, ‘Interior with Mexican Doll’, ‘Dido’, ‘Barbara Guest Archaics’ and ‘Black Crows (Oranges No. 1)’.

The lecture opens with a special welcome and poetry reading by JC Andrews, a lesbian poet from Springfield, Arkansas, and a University of Nebraska–Lincoln PhD candidate who brings a local and literary connection to the program. Andrews’s debut collection, ‘Of an Ilk’, won the 2026 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition.
