Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian will present 'Lino Brocka – Anarquista Nacional', a film-concert by Filipino artist, filmmaker and poet Khavn De La Cruz, as part of Doclisboa 2026’s retrospective of Lino Brocka. The event is listed for 17 October 2026 at the Estúdio of Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian.

De La Cruz will accompany the screening with a solo piano score performed entirely improvisationally, continuously and in real time. The improvisation is inspired by Brocka’s favourite song, 'What I Did For Love' from 'A Chorus Line', while its melodic material is original and developed during the performance.

Running for 70 minutes, the work brings together archival cinema, live improvisation and political memory in a single act that revives Brocka’s work. Brocka used cinema to denounce corruption and oppression in the Philippines and considered himself an anarchist; the film-concert pays tribute to that legacy.

De La Cruz is a Filipino filmmaker, writer, musician and artist associated with the Filipino No Wave movement, and has made more than 300 films since 1994. The film-concert premiered in Rotterdam in 2023 and has since screened at festivals including TIDF Taipei, BAFICI Buenos Aires and Festival du Nouveau Cinema Montréal.
