Mathieu Copeland’s ‘A Exposição de um Sonho’ opens on 19 September at Espaço Engawa, Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, Lisbon, where it will run through 22 February 2027.
Curated by Copeland and conceived as a record, the exhibition brings together 16 dreams interpreted as songs. The Espaço Engawa remains empty while the compositions take spatial form through mandalas by José de Almada Negreiros, Philippe Decrauzat, Myriam Gourfink, Peter Halley, Olivier Mosset and Eduardo Terrazas.
German musician, composer and performer FM Einheit composed the 16 works from dreams written by Gabriel Abrantes, Robert Barry, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Einheit, Alexandre Estrela, Tim Etchells, Susie Green, Karl Holmqvist, David Link, Pierre Paulin, Emilie Pitoiset, Lee Ranaldo, Lætitia Sadier, Susan Stenger and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
The dream interpretations were recorded live, publicly and privately, at the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian’s Anfiteatro ao Ar Livre and Grande Auditório in Lisbon. Einheit was joined by Volker Kamp, Robert Poss, Susan Stenger, Erika Stucky, Saskia von Klitzing and singers from the Coro Gulbenkian.
