A free, informal afternoon tour of ‘Gwen John: Strange Beauties’ focuses on key themes in the exhibition. Booking is essential, and both an exhibition ticket and a tour ticket are required.
The listed sessions include ‘Self-Portraits’ on Sunday 4 October at 3–3.30pm, led by artist and art historian Emily Learmont; ‘An Interior Life’ on Sunday 1 November at 2–2.30pm and 3–3.30pm, also led by Learmont; and ‘Portraits of Power’ on Sunday 6 December at 2–2.30pm and 3–3.30pm, led by artist Katharine Aarrestad.
The exhibition spans Gwen John’s early work in Wales through late works inspired by her religious beliefs, French modernism and her surroundings in the Parisian suburb of Meudon, bringing together rarely seen drawings and watercolours, many displayed for the first time.
‘Gwen John: Strange Beauties’ offers a fresh new perspective on John’s work and artistic legacy, while the rarely seen material gives insight into her quiet yet determined artistic vision. The exhibition was developed by Amgueddfa Cymru in partnership with National Galleries of Scotland, Yale Center for British Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.
