The Museo de América will present the photography exhibition 'Imagen y memoria. Argentina 1976-2003', dedicated to Argentine photographer Eduardo Longoni, from 29 October 2026 to 21 March 2027 in the first-floor cloister. The exhibition addresses Argentina’s dictatorship, the recovery of democracy, and the traces of violence and collective memory.
Presented on the 50th anniversary of Argentina’s 1976 coup, the exhibition aims, through the recovery of these stories, to encourage critical thinking and reflection on the importance and fragility of human rights. The Museo de América describes the exhibition as a declaration of intentions and the beginning of a new institutional line of study and reflection focused on the experiences, conflicts and memories that have shaped the present and continue to form part of it.
Longoni’s images are fragments of memory: his perspective does not merely record events, but forms a visual account of a country moving through a process in which it continues to confront the traces and persistence of pain.
The circumstances in which he worked also placed photographers under suspicion: security forces treated them as moving targets, while photographing the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo brought persecution and intimidation. A museum programme offers a guided visit led by Longoni, covering the atmosphere in the streets during the military dictatorship, the economic crisis, hunger and everyday violence, the emergence of human-rights movements and the white headscarf of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, as well as how photographs of the trial of the military leaders were made and the tense first years of the democratic transition.
