Dr. Ina Dinter’s lecture ‘Repetition and Experiment in James Ensor’s Late Work’ is scheduled for 8 October 2026, from 18:00 to 19:00. The programme will examine repetition and experimentation in the late work of James Ensor.
Dinter’s lecture focuses on Ensor’s self-portraits and the varied group known as the ‘Love Gardens’. It also addresses questions of originality, seriality and artistic innovation, while considering aesthetic and philosophical concepts of modernity.
The exhibition presents more than 100 etchings, including numerous hand-coloured examples, and reflects Ensor’s expressive imagery and stylistic diversity.
Its focus is Ensor’s printmaking, which developed across two principal phases, from 1886 to 1889 and from 1895 to 1899. The exhibition describes his often ironically inflected imagery as populated by masks, grotesques and social allusions, and as resistant to conventional stylistic classifications of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Dinter earned her doctorate in 2015 with a study of Ensor’s little-researched late work.
