A program on the postwar printmaking of Corita Kent and June Wayne will take place Saturday, October 10, at 1 p.m. in the Gunn Theater at the Legion of Honor. The program will examine their work and the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts’ support of their early careers and other contemporary printmakers.
In the 1950s, the newly established Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts became an important advocate of trailblazing American printmakers by acquiring and exhibiting their early work.
Based in Los Angeles, Sister Corita Kent and June Wayne helped catalyze a vibrant and experimental period of printmaking in the postwar era and trained a generation of contemporary printmakers. Wayne was the founder of Tamarind Lithography Workshop.
The event is part of the ‘A Closer Look’ series, a curatorial lecture series exploring the development of the collections and their art-historical significance. The series features in-depth presentations that highlight collection objects while demystifying creative practices spanning thousands of years.
