Ahmed Arif, who was born in Filibe and died in 1909, was regarded as one of the notable calligraphers of the 19th century. He began taking lessons in beautiful writing in Filibe.
He came to Istanbul in 1876 because of the Ottoman-Russian War, known as the 93 Harbi.
