Jorge Queiroz won the 2026 Júlio Pomar Painting Prize. The award ceremony for the 2026 painting prize will take place on 29 September 2026 at 17:00 at the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar.
The jury—João Laia, Eva Mendes and Catarina Rosendo, chaired by Sara Antónia Matos—met on 7 July 2026 to elect the winner.
In assessing the proposals and selecting the winner, the jury considered originality and an individual language, openness to new possibilities in the field of painting and art, and the coherence and consistency of the artists’ trajectories.
Since presenting his first paintings at the Pavilhão Branco in Lisbon in 2015, Queiroz has become one of the most prominent Portuguese artists working in painting, following a decades-long trajectory that began with the practice of drawing.
Continuing to work in drawing alongside painting, Queiroz has demonstrated notable coherence and artistic maturity across both forms of expression.
His training included painting at Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação in Lisbon in 1991 and 1993, followed by study at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1999. He lived in New York before establishing himself in Berlin in 2004, and later returned to Lisbon.
