The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes has mourned the death of Carlos Alonso, describing him as a great master and an unavoidable reference point in the contemporary visual history of the country. The museum said it accompanies his family, friends and colleagues in this sad moment.
The same account affirmed the power of art in Alonso’s practice as an ethical, poetic and political gesture.
The museum recalled ‘Carlos Alonso. Pintura y memoria’, a major homage exhibition held there in 2019. It also recalled ‘Dante x Alonso’, an exhibition that, between 2021 and 2022, brought together a series of works inspired by the work of the great Florentine poet and toured institutions across the country.
The Museo Moderno and the Asociación Amigos del Moderno also said farewell to Alonso with enormous admiration and affection. They offered their warm condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the wider artistic community.
