Museu de Maricel is presenting ‘Absències i presències. Els artistes de Charles Deering a la Col·lecció d’Art Banc Sabadell’ from 2 May to 25 October 2026.
The exhibition brings together 26 works from the Banc Sabadell Art Collection, symbolically reconstructing the legacy of Catalan and Spanish artists from the late 19th and early 20th centuries who were connected to the Deering Collection. Its stated aim is to recover the presence of artists who formed part of Charles Deering’s project and contributed to defining Maricel’s artistic and symbolic character.
The works return to Maricel’s spaces in what the exhibition describes as an exercise of return, reactivating the site’s role in the construction of Sitges’s artistic heritage and cultural projection. The exhibition also includes 17 historical images of the Maricel complex, establishing a relationship between past and present.
Represented artists include Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, Joaquim Mir, Hermenegild Anglada-Camarasa, Joaquim Sunyer, Eliseu Meifrèn, Arcadi Mas i Fondevila, Joan Roig i Soler, Oleguer Junyent, Joan Llaverias, Enric Casanovas and Ricard Canals. The selection ranges from luminist landscape painting to portraiture, sculpture and works on paper.
Charles Deering, an American industrialist and collector, promoted Maricel at the beginning of the 20th century as a setting for an ambitious collection of Hispanic art. Four works, by Santiago Rusiñol, Joan Roig i Soler, Hermenegild Anglada-Camarasa and Ramón de Zubiaurre, have audio descriptions.
