An account of a public conversation between Alice Yura and Rosângela Rennó, moderated by curator Thierry Freitas, was published on September 4, 2026. The conversation expanded on the central questions running through the exhibition on view at Pina Contemporânea until September 13.
Its guiding thread was the convergence and differentiation between Yura’s and Rennó’s artistic practices, asking how two generations of artists working with photography relate to archives, images, and stories. Rennó was important to Yura’s formation, and Yura first encountered her work while studying Visual Arts at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul.
The exhibition ‘Um ato fotográfico’ is a significant selection from research Yura has developed since 2020 into the relationship between art and life, addressing memory, affection, the body, and identity; the visual artist calls herself ‘nipo-caipira’. The installation ‘Meu pai, um estrangeiro’ (2026) brings together photographs Yura received from her father during his travels between Brazil and Japan. The company was founded by her grandfather and uncles in 1958 and operated until 2025; photographs were developed there, three-by-four portraits were produced, and important memories and moments were recorded.
At the center of the exhibition’s Galeria Praça, a round table held three albums of photographs from Yura’s family that visitors could handle and view. Yura brought the albums into the exhibition as a way to recover a collective moment: looking at photography albums, telling stories, and hearing them.
