Sarah Sense will speak with Elizabeth Cronin, Curator of Photography at The New York Public Library, on September 23, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. EST at Bruce Silverstein Gallery; the conversation will explore Sense’s distinctive photo-weaving practice, her engagement with photography and archival materials, and the ways memory, history, and cultural continuity are carried through material and form.
Sense is a Chitimacha/Choctaw artist whose photo-weavings combine contemporary landscape photographs, historical imagery, maps, government records, family archives and hand-prepared rivercane. Drawing upon traditional basketry patterns, her work examines Indigenous relationships to ancestral land and systems of representation, ownership and erasure that have attempted to sever those connections.
The exhibition ‘Land, Line, Blood, Memory’ comprises more than 20 new photo-weavings made with the artist’s contemporary landscape photographs, archival documents, historical images, maps, printed bamboo and rice papers, cotton thread, ribbon and hand-prepared rivercane. ‘Land, Line, Blood, Memory’ is on view at Bruce Silverstein Gallery from September 17 through November 21, 2026.
Cronin is the Robert B. Menschel Curator of Photography at The New York Public Library and has curated and co-curated exhibitions including ‘Viewpoints: Latin America in Photographs,’ ‘Anna Atkins Refracted’ and ‘Public Eye: 175 Years of Sharing Photography.’
