Te Tuhi has announced Ava Trevella as the second recipient of the Iris Fisher Artist Studio Residency.
The residency is a three-month studio programme at Te Tuhi for an emerging visual artist or collective, providing an opportunity to experiment, explore and develop new work. Artists are not required to produce a final work or exhibition during the residency; the focus is on developing their artistic practice.
Trevella is a painter whose studio-led practice explores interconnected themes of self, nature and place through intimate engagement and figuration.
She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) at Elam School of Fine Arts in 2023 and has recently shown at Centre of Contemporary Art Toi Moroki in Ōtautahi Christchurch and Blue Oyster Art Project Space in Ōtepoti Dunedin.
Trevella said the residency would provide generous time, space and support to make paintings, while allowing her to return and reconnect with friends after studying in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
The residency continues Te Tuhi’s support for emerging artists in Aotearoa New Zealand, following the Iris Fisher Art Awards, launched in 1981, the annual Iris Fisher Art Award, held from 1984 to 2005, and the Iris Fisher Scholarship, held from 2007 to 2024.
