Nottingham Contemporary will present 'Sarah Cunningham: Midnight Sun' from 9 October 2026 to 11 January 2027. The exhibition will be Cunningham’s first institutional solo exhibition and the largest presentation of her work to date.
The exhibition marks a homecoming to the city where Cunningham was born and raised. Cunningham was a British artist who lived from 1993 to 2024.
Cunningham sought out the essential and the alive through imaginary wildernesses and fluid forestscapes, drawing inspiration from science-fiction literature, art history, ecology and personal references.
Through sweeping expressionistic gestures, Cunningham built up layers of paint that she shaped into fluid motion, creating landscapes as scenes of possibility and portals into other worlds. The exhibition is curated by Katie Simpson and Niall Ó Faircheallaigh.
