Although Lialia Kuchma has explored printmaking, calligraphy, sculpture and photography, tapestry emerged as her most distinctive artistic language. Rooted in Ukrainian craft traditions, her woven works address memory, identity, resilience and the enduring preservation of culture.
Her award-winning tapestry ‘Ukrainian War No. 4’ was selected for the biennial through a competitive jury process. The work is presented as an artistic statement on war, national memory and resistance, reflecting Kuchma’s personal interpretation of tragedy while honoring the resilience and enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people during Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Kuchma has also contributed deeply to the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art’s cultural mission since its earliest years.
