The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art has announced the death of its board chair, Orysia Cardoso, who died on August 29, 2026. The Chicago institution published its notice on September 7.
UIMA described Cardoso as a deeply dedicated leader whose many years of service strengthened the Institute and helped guide it through periods of growth and change. In its tribute, the organisation credited her with giving extensively to UIMA and leading with warmth, vision and a deep love of Ukrainian art, culture and community.
The statement frames Cardoso’s work within the Institute’s continuing cultural purpose. UIMA said she believed deeply in its mission and in the importance of preserving and promoting Ukrainian culture for future generations. It also recalled the personal qualities that accompanied her leadership, naming her kindness, wisdom, generosity and friendship toward colleagues and others who worked with her.
UIMA said Cardoso’s presence would be deeply missed, and that her legacy would remain an enduring part of both the Institute and the community she served. The notice was signed by Motria Melnyk, UIMA’s president.
