John Bright is expected to discuss the highlights of his career, his approach to costume design, the evolution of the industry over the past sixty years and behind-the-scenes stories from some of his best-known productions. The special conversation accompanies Dovecot’s current exhibition, ‘Costume Couture: Sixty Years of Cosprop’, which celebrates six decades of costume-making and presents the artistry, craftsmanship and history behind the company.
Bright’s career includes early work in the costume industry and the founding of Cosprop in 1966. He is an Academy Award- and BAFTA-winning costume designer, known in part for long-standing collaborations with Merchant Ivory Productions and fellow costume designer Jenny Beavan.
The discussion will also include insights into building Cosprop into one of the world’s leading costume houses.
The exhibition features costumes associated with Helena Bonham Carter in ‘A Room with a View’, Meryl Streep in ‘Out of Africa’, Maggie Smith in ‘Downton Abbey’, Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and Leslie Manville in ‘Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris’. Costumes, accessories and sketches present the design and making process from script to screen.
