'Sápmi och dess kulturhistoria' is a seven-part seminar series running through April 2027. The series was initiated in connection with the final report of Sweden’s Truth Commission for the Sámi People, which is due to be presented on 30 September.
Titled 'Vargjägaren som blev en samisk klassiker', it examines Johan Turi’s art from an Indigenous aesthetic perspective.
For a long time, Turi was known outside the Sámi world chiefly as the author of 'Muitalus sámiid birra' (1910), described as the first Sámi book written in Sámi by a Sámi person.
The series is made in collaboration with Harald Gaski, the Várdduo Centre for Sámi Research at Umeå University, Tjállegoáhte Writers’ Centre Sápmi, Stockholm University of the Arts and HDK-Valand.
The exhibition 'Om det fula och det vackra' features Johan Turi, Outi Pieski and Johanna Minde and runs from 5 September 2026 to 24 April 2027.
