Nick Oberthaler’s exhibition 'plains/portals' will be presented by Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Marais from 5 September to 10 October 2026 in Paris Marais.
The large-scale paintings continue the Austrian artist’s exploration of the canvas as a threshold or window, setting geometric abstraction against the alluring depths of implied illusionistic space.
A group of smaller works reveals a more gestural aspect of Oberthaler’s practice.
Drawing on centuries-old principles of painting theory, Oberthaler uses recurring oblique lines and planes of flat colour that lead the eye into the deep space of the canvas, creating images that move between two-dimensionality and spatial illusion, and between abstraction and recognition.
