Contemporary by Angela Li will open ‘Bird Watching Snowflakes’, a solo exhibition by Hong Kong artist Kong Chun Nga, Kitty, on 17 September 2026. Running through 17 October, the presentation marks ten years since her last solo exhibition and brings together nearly 20 new paintings.
Accumulated over time, these notes provide the material for an exhibition conceived as a record of everyday life. Literature, film, music and personal experience also feed paintings that turn ordinary details toward imagined worlds.
In one corner of a sphere, a hexagonal snowflake falls onto a triangular rooftop. Elsewhere, a small slate-coloured bird stands before a window and watches grey snowflakes on a television screen. Kong’s paintings also include figures, animals and landscapes shaped by feelings that are difficult to describe.
The artist has likened her own urban existence at times to that of a cat—rebellious in thought but overcome by sleep—and at others to that of a pigeon occupied with survival while looking for a place to rest. These reflections accompany an exhibition in which the routines and pressures of daily life furnish material for scenes with a dreamlike, surreal logic.
Kong works primarily with acrylic and coloured pencil, developing paintings through an intuitive collage process that combines her own photographs with found imagery. Some paintings emerge directly from her poetry, while literature, cinema, music and art history continue to shape her visual language. Born in Hong Kong in 1994, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from the joint RMIT University and Hong Kong Art School programme and an MA in English (Literary Studies) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her poetry has been published in Voice & Verse Poetry Magazine.
