Edwynn Houk Gallery will open ‘Abelardo Morell: Out of Paper, In Dialogue with Gene Davis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski & Larry Poons’ on September 10, 2026. Running through October 31, the New York exhibition brings Morell’s newest photographs together with four paintings by the artists named in its title—Davis, Noland, Olitski and Poons—and marks the first time the gallery has presented painting alongside photography.
The exhibition focuses on Morell’s recent photographs, in which he uses the camera to move beyond representation and investigate color, form and abstraction. The gallery frames these works in relation to painters Morell counts among his influences, with the four paintings offering, in its description, a direct view of material and ideas he has carried into photography.
The selection also includes Gene Davis’s ‘Untitled’ (1965), Kenneth Noland’s ‘Orange and Blue’ (1966), Jules Olitski’s ‘Paradise Pull’ (1991), and Larry Poons’s ‘Untitled (016B-1)’ (2016).
The show is Morell’s sixth exhibition with Edwynn Houk Gallery. Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1948, Morell immigrated to the United States in 1962. A retrospective of his work was jointly organized and presented by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Getty in Los Angeles and the High Museum in Atlanta, traveling from 2013 to 2014.
An artist’s reception is scheduled for Thursday, September 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.
