Pedro Cera has announced its representation of André Romão, the Lisbon-born artist whose work extends across sculpture and poetry. Born in Lisbon in 1984, Romão lives in the city.
The gallery describes a practice shaped by transformations among materials, temporalities and identities. In its account, Romão’s sculpture and poetry unsettle boundaries between human and animal, natural and artificial, and organic and inorganic, with metamorphosis serving as a recurring condition of the work.
Works listed on the artist page indicate the range of materials involved. ‘Noite’ (2026) brings together a plaster sculptural fragment from 1950s France with terracotta, plaster, acrylic paint, varnish and dust. ‘Stargazer’ (2026) combines a Japanese Edo-period ‘zo-onna’ mask in polychrome wood with a root. In ‘Alien kin 4’ (2026), beetles, mussels, abalone shell and peacock feathers are assembled with plexiglas.
Romão’s work has previously been featured at institutions including Serralves Museum in Porto, the Gulbenkian Foundation and MAAT in Lisbon, Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, MACRO in Rome and the Liverpool Biennial 2021. His residencies have included Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin in 2010, MACRO in Rome in 2014 and Gasworks in London in 2020.
