Two portraits by Ramon Casas are being shown in the exhibition ‘Absències i presències. Els artistes de Charles Deering a la Col·lecció d’Art Banc Sabadell’ at the Cau Ferrat Museum in Sitges. The first work, ‘Retrat de senyora’, is described as a drawing made in pencil, ink and wash on paper. The second, ‘Retrat de Maria Caralt’, is an oil on canvas dating to around 1907. Together, the pair adds a focused example of Casas’s portrait practice to the exhibition’s wider presentation of artists associated with Charles Deering and the Art Collection of Banc Sabadell.
Cau Ferrat Museum, based in Sitges, is part of the Museus de Sitges network. Its website identifies the institution under the Museu del Cau Ferrat, reflecting the museum’s role as a historical and cultural site for the display of art connected to Sitges and broader Catalan modernism.
The museum’s post did not provide further curatorial detail about the installation or the selection of the two works, but it did specify that both portraits can be seen in ‘Absències i presències. The title suggests a focus on artists linked to the American collector Charles Deering and works drawn from the Banc Sabadell art collection.
Casas is one of the best-known figures in Catalan modernism, and these two portraits show different media used by the artist across the first decade of the 20th century. The dating of the works, 1904 and around 1907, places them within a period when portraiture remained a central strand of his output.
The museum’s notice did not include exhibition dates or a closing schedule. It did, however, confirm the presence of both ‘Retrat de senyora’ and ‘Retrat de Maria Caralt’ in the exhibition now visible at Cau Ferrat Museum in Sitges.
