Hearne Pardee’s ‘Landscaping’ will run at Bowery Gallery in New York from September 8 to October 3, 2026. The exhibition presents a selection of recent paintings and collages and culminates fifty years of Pardee’s work across landscape, abstraction and collage.
The recent works take up Pardee’s transition from the West Coast to the Hudson Valley, tracing a route from the sidewalk gardens of suburban California to a new studio and its cultivated landscape. Combining observation with photographs, Pardee maps his new surroundings through views from different cardinal points and at different seasons.
Collage is a defining method in the exhibition. Colored papers introduce spatial dislocations and emphasise what the exhibition describes as the elusive character of everyday perception. The collages are characterised as exuberant and improvisatory, while the paintings incorporate the stabilising intervention of a landscape architect.
Among the selected works displayed is ‘Hudson Landscape’, a four-part acrylic collage on paper. Other works include ‘Orr Road Garden’, an oil and acrylic collage on canvas; ‘Organic Garden’, an acrylic collage on canvas; and the oil paintings ‘Lawn’, ‘Snow’ and ‘Rocks and Water’. The selection also lists ‘Peripheral Vision’, a mixed-media work on canvas, as well as ‘Gazing’, ‘Garage’ and ‘Suburbs’.
