Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln, Nebraska, is presenting ‘Remembering Modern Art: The Collection of the Museum of American Art, Berlin’ from August 14, 2026, through January 3, 2027. Presented in the United States for the first time, the collection of the Museum of American Art, Berlin (MoAA), tells the story of the institutions and people that constructed the canon of American modern art at mid-century.
Led by a MoAA assistant, the tours offer insights into MoAA’s collection and Sheldon’s place within the history of modern art. Tours are scheduled for September 5 at 1 p.m.; September 11 at noon; September 12 at 1 p.m.; September 18 at noon; September 19 at 1 p.m.; September 25 at noon; and September 26 at 1 p.m. The September 5, 18, 19, 25 and 26 tours are free and open to everyone, with registration encouraged.
The exhibition schedule also lists ‘Grace Hartigan: The Gift of Attention,’ on view from August 14, 2026, through January 3, 2027. The exhibition explores the creative exchange between painter Grace Hartigan and the New York poets who inspired her. ‘New Horizons,’ curated by University of Nebraska–Lincoln students in Professor Dana Fritz’s landscape-photography seminar, presents photographs of the Great Plains that explore the horizon as a point of connection. It is on view August 14, 2026, through January 3, 2027.
‘Gender, Genre, Generation: Women Painting Abstraction’ is on view from August 14, 2026, through January 3, 2027. The exhibition examines abstraction through recent work by Candida Alvarez, Rochelle Feinstein, Carrie Moyer and Amy Sillman.
On September 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Zanna Gilbert, senior research specialist at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, will present on her exhibition ‘How to Be a Guerrilla Girl’ (GRI, 2025–26). Her lecture will explore how archival and curatorial research illuminates the histories of feminist, conceptual and activist art practices.
Kurt Andersen is scheduled to appear on September 24, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Originally from Omaha, Andersen wrote about Edward Hopper’s ‘Room in New York’ in the spring 2026 issue of Prairie Schooner. The painting is in Sheldon’s permanent collection. He will discuss the essay and introduce his latest novel, ‘The Breakup,’ set in 2045.
Elsewhere, ‘Sheldon Statewide: Hyphen American’ runs from August 28, 2026, through June 2, 2027. Its exhibition dates include Chadron State College in Chadron, August 28–September 28, 2026; Prairie Arts Center in North Platte, October 1–November 1, 2026; and Museum of the High Plains in McCook, November 4–December 2, 2026.
