Centro Internazionale di Fotografia Scavi Scaligeri in Verona is presenting ‘Dorothea Lange’ through 1 November 2026. Organised by the Comune di Verona and produced by CAMERA Turin, the exhibition is curated by Walter Guadagnini and Monica Poggi.
Bringing together nearly 200 works, the presentation spans Lange’s work from the crisis that followed the 1929 crash to the incarceration of US citizens of Japanese descent during the Second World War. It examines migration, social inequality, discrimination and drought.
The exhibition includes photographs of unemployment-office queues, strikes and demonstrations during the Great Depression, as well as rural routes travelled by families leaving their land amid drought, dust storms and agricultural crisis. Works include ‘Migrant mother’ (1936), held by The New York Public Library; ‘A large sign reading I am an American’ (1942), also held by The New York Public Library; and ‘Nisei girl with baggage’ (1942), from the National Archives and Records Administration.
Selected works come from the collections of the Library of Congress in Washington and The New York Public Library.
