Kai Nielsen’s ‘Water Mother’ (1919–20) will be removed from the basin in Glyptoteket’s Winter Garden in late September 2026 for conservation and restoration.
The sculpture has stood in the basin since 1921. Visitors can see it in the Winter Garden until Sunday, 27 September.
‘Water Mother’ will not return to the basin before the building restoration project ‘Future Glyptotek’ begins in early 2028. A Roman sculpture of the sea god Triton from Glyptoteket’s ancient collection will be installed in its place.
The Triton sculpture dates from the late second century CE and comes from Rome. It was found in connection with a structure crossed by three water pipes. The work previously stood in the Winter Garden, in the position now occupied by ‘Gloria Victis’.
