Yuan Yuan’s first exhibition in the United States opens on 9 September at The Upstairs at 39 Walker in New York. On view through 24 October 2026, the presentation brings together new work by the artist.
The paintings extend Yuan’s ongoing interest in the dissolution of familiar images and environments. Motifs of manmade landscapes, water and aquatic life merge with vernacular urban Asian settings and Western art-historical imagery. Yuan uses both refined and broad gestural brushstrokes, painting wet-on-wet to produce near-liquid surfaces in which forms coalesce and recede into colour and light.
The exhibition includes ‘Driftscape’ (2026), an oil-on-linen work composed of three panels. Its overall dimensions are 78 3/4 by 114 1/8 inches (200 by 290 cm).
An opening will be held on Wednesday, 9 September, from 6 to 8pm.
